Namibia High Latency

Hi everyone,

I am a Tf2 player that joins the SA Tf2 servers, never had an issue with latency. I usually played with 90-110 ingame latency which was great to play with. When I tried to play again after a long time of break, my ingame latency is crazy. I checked the ping and the tracert, but all seems to be fine : Average ping of 98, highest 111 and lowest of 92 to IS servers, tracerts range from 84 - 94 with no odd numbers amd the latency in the game-join lobby window before I join a game is always on < 150.

As soon as i join a game, the latency will automatically start rising from 110 to 600 to 900 and so on. Then I can't even move anymore. I checked for running steam downloads or other programs thtat might be downloading but I found none. I have steam and hl added to firewall exceptions and my firewall is also off. The ports of steam TF2 have been added to my router which is a ADSL uncapped 256. Even if I join a server with no players on, the latency will still rise to that 900 or more.

Any ideas EXCEPT for "baah, your from Namibia no wonder the ping is so high" and "baah you have a 256 ADSL rofl omg wtf". I could play fine before but why all of a sudden is the INGAME ping rising to these levels ? If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Oh and my PC is more than capable of handling TF2 graphics =) so graphic or performance issues should not be up for discussion.

Re: Namibia High Latency

I stay in Windhoek - my contract hasn't expired yet. I have to wait a few months for that to happen though ! Hopefully NAM will get a miracle and have like uncapped 10MB lines up at that time - C'mon, lets be optimistic here :S

[EDIT]

Ok - I've optimised the game cache files ,- let's see if that will help :S

[EDIT]

So when you see a user with the name of "obyzouth" standing somewhere, maybe jumping against a wall or shooting around for no reason - then you'll know it's me on 900 latency trying to figure out wtf is going on.

[EDIT]

This is both on SGS and on IS servers though

I think the best option would to be to wait for a Admin to reply

Re: Namibia High Latency

This has also happened to me as of 2 days ago, I join my own server and I get an fps of 60 and no lag, as soon as I join a server, the sound loops and my ping steadily rises from 50- 800 and stay at 800, it takes me 40 seconds to join a team and chgoose a class because of the lag.

I think it did this because of a new HUD I tried, have you tried any new configs or HUD's lately?

Nope, tried no new HUD. I only had a issue to play TF2. My inital issue was that Steam would not load TF2 no matter what. YES I have a valid steam license and I purchased the Game, so YES I'm using a valid authentic legal version of TF2 and NO cracked BS. Anyway, this is what I did to resolve the no TF2 startup (used to say starting TF2 but would never open the window and would load the "steam" window instead):

0.) Move TF2 files from \Steam\SteamApps *excluding profile, for backup puposes

1.) Uninstall Steam with REVO unistaller

2.) Download Steam client

3.) Install steam client

4.) Download steam platform updates

5.) Restore TF2 from backup *backup I did a few months ago

6.) Move and overwrite \Steam\Steamapps TF2 files from 0.)

7.) Start TF2 shortcut.

What I can do, but what I don't want to, is to go through steps 1 - 5 and then let steam download the TF2 updates again which will take lightyears. However, I am not aware that files cause lag being when connecting to a server :S Oh and the latency will stop at 980, and then crash the game - Freeze to death.

Re: Namibia High Latency

To fix this problem I deleted my cfg folder, TF2 doesn't redownlaod one on startup, it just creates a new one while launching, I hope this helps you too.

@_HaMmY_

Will try that when the current task is done - started re-downloading the TF2 updates after I restored my TF2 backup. It's running since my last reply, while running other downloads as well... Will try your idea as soon as it's done with the download as it has 950MB left :S

@xt3rminator

No I am not running Windows 7 and No I never disable my anti-virus. Yes, added the steam folder to exceptions already.

Re: Namibia High Latency

You're not supposed t add the Steam folder to exceptions, that's too much for your antivirus to scan, only add the folder that updates itsself constantly to the exceptions list, the path is:

C:\Program Files\Steam\appcache\stats\*

Hope it helps!

@_HaMmY_

The steam folder will be excluded from scans entirely, when the AV does scheduled scans and manual scans so it will "skip" the entire folder on scans. Anyway, exclusions don't matter then - as the realtime scanner will always access and scan it anyway.

I have to wait for the w-end to continue the TF2 update download. Anyway, thanks for all the advice and suggestions so far - Will check and use them as soon as this TF2 download is finally done =)
